FESTAC BANK ROBBERY-STRAY BULLETS KILL MUM, 2-YR OLD DAUGHTER(PHOTO)

A mother and 2 year old daughter have been killed after being hit by stray bullets at Block 8, 23 Road House when robbers laid siege close to their house in Festac Town, Lagos, shooting indiscriminately from a machine gun reportedly mounted at 23 Road Junction.
Mrs. Jane Beluchukwu-Ndirika, a nurse and her 14-month-old daughter Nmesoma, were inside their two-bedroom apartment on the top floor of their three-storey building when the bullets pierced through the door and hit them..the Nation reports

The late Mrs. Beluchukwu-Ndirika was a nurse at the Igando General Hospital in Lagos.
The late Mrs. Beluchukwu-Ndirika’s friend, simply identified as Uche yesterday narrated in tears, how mother and child died.
She said:

“My friend could not get help almost an hour after she was shot, because the robbers were still on shooting spree.
“It was terrible. They took their time. I cannot even explain, I do not know what to say. But I can tell you that my best friend and sister was soaked in blood and in pains for about one hour.
“I do not live in Festac but I came to visit her and was about to leave this morning (yesterday). We have already put my bag outside and I was playing with her son.
“Suddenly, we started hearing gunshots, it was scary, I have never heard anything like that. We peeped and saw people in army camouflage and some in suit. They took their time, and were shooting non-stop.
“The bullets were just sounding from different directions. So, we hid at the back of the door. But the baby started crying and Jane went into the room and carried her.

“The next thing I saw was something that moved like fire and in a very fast speed. The next thing I heard was Jane screaming.
“She called out for help, by that time she had managed to put the baby on the bed in the room. She was becoming weak and going down, so I tried to hold her but could not.
“So, I took one of her children’s clothes and tried to stop the blood flow, that was when I saw a hole on her chest. I was shouting for help but no one could come out because the armed robbers were still there.
“I called her neighbours, who called the police but even the police did not come. The armed robbers were there for about one hour after shooting. My friend was soaked in blood. The baby’s blood also soaked the bed.
“I watched my friend die and I could not do much to help her. Please do not even talk about police because they did not come out.
“The armed robbers took their time; they were loading bullets into their guns and were shooting and discussing among themselves.
“From this room, we heard them shouting and telling their colleagues to come out first; it looks like they were just enjoying themselves without interruption,” she said.

Corroborating Uche’s story, one Mr. John Irabor, a neighbour to the deceased said stray bullets entered two other flats in the buiding.
He told The Nation that Mrs. Beluchukwu-Ndirika was already dead by the time they took her to the hospital.

“We took her to the hospital in my car. The truth is by the time I got into her apartment after the robbers left, she was already dead.
“They mounted their machine gun just by the junction here. They were shooting repeatedly. I am very disappointed with the police because I personnaly called them. I called the Area Commander and I also called the state command’s Public Relations Officer, who assured me they were on their way.
“Unfortunately, the police did not show up until the robbers had fled.
“So, I came into the apartment and alerted other neighbours; we quickly took her to a hospital on 321 road (C close), but they refused to take her in and said she no longer had the pulse.
“They told us to take her to a general hospital and we quickly rushed to the hospital at First Gate, where they issued her death certificate. We took her to The Lord’s Chosen, where her husband is a Pastor and after some time, we took her to Igando General Hospital, where she worked as a nurse.
“She was confirmed dead at three hospitals. The baby also died. It was my son who carried the baby on a bike and rushed her to the hospital but by that time she had passed on too,” he said.

The baby’s remains were wrapped and kept inside the room at the time of our reporter’s visit to the house yesterday. Neighbours and church members thronged the deceased’s residence.
It was also learnt that a security man at one of the banks raided and another resident were hit by stray bullets.
While the resident, who was in a compound, adjacent to that of the Ndirikas, was said to have had one of his fingers chopped off by stray bullet, it could not be ascertained where the bullet hit the bank guard.

‘You’re Not Alone!’ Gabrielle Union, 42, Speaks Candidly about Her Battle to Conceive…

She spent her 20s and 30s establishing herself in Hollywood, with roles in films like Bring It On.
Now happily married, Gabrielle Union has opened up about the pain of infertility – saying she hates hearing it’s because of her success.‎

During an appearance on The Today Show on Monday, the 42-year-old actress who wedded her 33-year-old husband Dwyane Wade, last year, explained that too often a woman’s career is blamed for
her subsequent failure to have a child.

‘I think TV shows and film kind of make the frigid, you know single-focused career woman, that her career is the root of all of the problems in her life. Can’t find a man, it’s the career. Marriage falls apart, it’s the career!…and that’s just not the case.’

‘If you happen to have issues with fertility as you’ve gotten older and you happen to have a career, all is not lost…there are so many options, and you’re not alone. Having a career is not the price that you pay for any ill.’

However Gabrielle stopped short of revealing how she was being treated, other than to say it was not IVF.

‘I was actually not talking about IVF for me personally, but more of just in general. Most of my friends who have done IVF aren’t women in their 40’s – women in their 20’s and 30’s.’

Gabrielle also shared her happiness at being married to her younger basketball star husband.

‘Like hot, delicious, it doesn’t get old! Everyday he gets out of bed I’m like, “Yes, thank you Jesus!” He looks just as good going as he does coming! It’s nice! It’s not a bad gig! Some people look at marriage as the end of freedom. And for some reason, especially my husband, has sort of looked at it as the freedom to finally be the man he always wanted to be.

I’ve had to get used to him being so freakishly happy…we really enjoy each other in a way that’s probably not very healthy for us.’

Gabrielle was seen on Monday, in a short grey turtleneck dress and floral print vest coat as she stepped out into New York City on Monday.

No More Naked Women in Playboy Magazine

Playboy magazine is to stop publishing images of naked women as part of its redesign.
The decision was apparently taken last month at a meeting attended by Playboy founder and current editor-in-chief Hugh Hefner. Its US owners say the internet has made nudity outdated, and pornographic magazines are no longer so commercially viable. Playboy’s circulation has dropped from 5.6 million in the 1970s to the current 800,000, official figures show.

Magazine executives admitted that Playboy – which was founded in 1953 – had been overtaken by the changes it pioneered. However, the magazine will still feature women in provocative poses – though not fully nude.

Playboy’s website has already banished nudity, partly to give it access to social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. And its popularity has soared with web traffic quadrupling.

Controversy as Man Allegedly Brutalised by Soldiers in Benin Cries Out; Army Insists He’s An Armed Robber

A man that was allegedly brutalised and shot on the leg by some soldiers in Benin, the Edo State capital, has raised alarm over what he called the inhuman treatment meted out to him.

But the Nigerian Army has insisted that the man, Mr. Daniel Owie, is an armed robber, who attempted to snatch the soldiers’ vehicle. The soldiers, who were reportedly led by an Army Captain, actually brutalised Owie before shooting him on the leg.

According to TheSun, in a petition to the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, the victim appealed to him to investigate the alleged murder attempt on his life and the breach of his fundamental human rights by
a group of soldiers led by a yet to be identified captain in Benin.

In the petition forwarded by his counsel, Mr. Benjamin Iluobe, Owie called on the IGP to direct the Edo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chris Ezike, to thoroughly investigate the abuse of power by the Army Captain and his gang.

Mr. Owie is currently receiving treatment at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) where he was chained to the bed allegedly on the orders of the Army Captain. The captain also detailed two soldiers to watch over him.

Owie said on October 3, about 8.pm, he met a vehicle that blocked Ihama Road and he went to the car to see if he could assist the owners to push the vehicle off the road.

He said that the occupants of the vehicle ordered him to go back to his car, adding that the way and manner they talked to him led to an exchange of words. He was subsequently given the beating of his life by the soldiers, he stated.

“Our client told us further that he was surprised that one of them introduced himself as a captain in the Nigerian Army and he further identified himself by brandishing his service pistol.

After the beating, the said the captain called his military boys, who came in a Hilux Pick-up van and, without questions and after he identified him to them, started to beat him again with fists and gun butt.

He further said he was shot on his leg on the instruction of the said captain. He also said that there were bruises all over his body, inflicted by the military men called by the captain.”

Owie alleged in the petition that after shooting him, they took him to the hospital in their military base along the Airport Road, Benin, where medical doctors on duty told them that they would not admit him on the ground that the military men were not consistent in their statement as per how he was shot.

He said he was later taken to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital where he was admitted.
He also alleged that his KIA SUV, two handsets, wristwatch and eyeglasses were taken away from him by the said captain and his boys.

“As if (as an) afterthought, at about 10am on Sunday, October 4, 2015, the said captain led other military officers to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital to handcuff him to the bed and detailed two military men to watch over him. They alleged that he was shot because he wanted to snatch their car from them,” the petition said.

But in a swift reaction, spokesman of the 4 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Benin, Capt. Joseph Unuakhalu, said Owie was a member of a robbery gang, who robbed an army officer along Ihama Road on the fateful day and was arrested by personnel of the Nigerian Air Force.
The Army statement reads:

“At about 10:30pm on 3 October 2015, Troops of 4 Brigade Garrison responding to a distress call, rescued an army officer, who was attacked by suspected armed robbers at Ihama Junction, along Airport Road, Benin city. During the attack, the officers index finger was cut off by the suspected robbers.

Earlier, the gang robbed two policemen from Lagos Command, who came for their colleague’s wedding. Prior to the troops’ arrival, personnel of the Nigerian Air Force close to the scene responded and arrested one of the suspected robbers, Mr. Daniel Owie, while others ran away abandoning a Kia Sportage Jeep with Reg No EDO BEN 190 BR.

He was handed over to oour troops on arrival. However, the suspect attempted to escape and was shot on his left leg. Suspect is currently receiving treatment at UBTH while investigations are ongoing.”

At the time of this report, Owie was still receiving treatment at the hospital. When contacted, medical director of the hospital, Prof. Michael Ibadin, said he was not aware of the development.
